How difficult should a high school drama class be?

I'm thinking a whole lot about this the night before school starts...how rigorous, how tough I should be.

I mean, the goal is that you guys learn...not become frustrated. Then again, you guys (I generalize) have a reputation for being very lazy. Sometimes a tough teacher makes you focus...makes you think...makes you try.

And sometimes a hard teacher can totally discourage you.

So I've got to find the balance between hard and easy. Maybe I'll shoot for this: I'll set up the tests to favor those students who really try. If you're not lazy, if you want to learn, I'll make sure that our tests give you an opportunity to show me that you're learning, that you get it.

Does that make sense? Just try, OK? Don't be lazy.

What do you think?

EXTRA CREDIT: On your next test, write this actor's real name on the bottom of the first page. Got it? Their real name on the bottom of the first page. I WILL NOT MENTION THIS BONUS IN CLASS. IT'S ONLY FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO READ MY BLOG.

I think the class should be difficult in terms of debate and opening oneself to new ideas, because that allows for everyone to reach more intellgent levels of thinking instead of boiling at the lowest point just to get by (as I've found many of my past -should be- worthwhile classes to be lacking in any sense of idealism or indepenant thought.).

I'm pretty sure it'll be fine as you've said, a good midpoint is moderation of both worlds---the already understood one and the one which nobody has begun to understand. :D

Wellll Coach White, I've loved being in Drama Class for the past 2 years that I've been in high school and I'm sure I'll love it this year too! You're very right in saying that a lot of drama students are lazy. In the past our classes have not wanted to excel in anything..we'd show up to class late..and just act like everything should be handed to us on a silver platter...then again we haven't exactly had the best situations handed to us either. Some of our past teachers didn't really care ANYTHING about what we wanted to say or try to do...we were VERY motivated but our teachers were only motivated by money.

I think that whatever you decide to do for your classes as a whole will work out. I like the fact you try to make your class appealing to those who do want to be there and want to learn and for those who were just placed in there.

I think it should be difficult enough for us to have to be challenged, but not so into it that we dont even get a little excited bout it..like i dont want it to be where its like a reg. assignment where its like "ugh not again" i want something fun and interesting but i want it to be something where i have to work with others as well as myself to make it work.

I think that your class is great! It really helped me to be less nervous in front of people... and that's only in the past 4 days of school! I'm sure this year will be great!
